Howto: vertical center an image

You know the problem: You have to center an image vertically. For that task you have the following possibilities:

  • using position: table-cell with vertical-align: center
  • using Javascript to add an margin-top dynamically

Both possibilities have limitations. The first possibility doesn't work with IE9 and lower. The second only works if the user allows the use of Javascript.

What I use suggest is the following:
'''<div class="vertical_div">
<span class="helper"></span><img src="path_to_image" height=250 />
</div>'''
'''.vertical_div {
height: 200px;
text-align: center;
}

.helper {
display: inline-block;
height: 100%;
vertical-align: middle;
}

img {
vertical-align: middle;
}'''
